let's talk about music, shall we?

one of the songs i really liked (and still do, mind you) is "yes" by butler and mcalmont. bernard butler was the original guitarist for the english band, suede. anyway, i guess due to creative differences with brett anderson, the band's lead vocalist, butler left after making the band's sophomoric album, "dog man star." ("dog man star" is an amazing album. if you've never heard it, i can make you a copy. it's truly one of the best albums ever). i have to admit i dont' know much about mcalmont, but if you want some information on him, here you go.

so "yes" was a single that came out of their collaboration back in 1995, and was on the album, "the sound of... butler and mcalmont" a year later.

here are the lyrics to "yes"

so you wanna know me now?
how i've been
you can't help someone recover
after what you did

so tell me, am i looking better ?
have you forgot?
whatever it was that you couldn't stand
about me, about me, about me because

YES, i do feel better
yes i do, i feel alright
i feel well enough to tell you what you can do
with what you've got, ahhh

so you wanna know me now ?
how i've been
you can't help someone recover
after what you did

so tell me, am i looking better ?
have you forgot?
whatever it was that you couldn't stand
about me, about me, about me because

YES, i do feel better
yes i do, i feel alright
i feel well enough to tell you what you can do
with what you've got, ahhh

YES, i do feel better
yes i do, i feel alright
i feel well enough to tell you what you can do
with what you've got, ahhh

on and on and on and on and on and on, is no one safe ?
stowed away, stowed away...yeaahhh baby, baby
yeeeeeeeeeeeeessssss

i feel mad enough to tell ya
what you can do with what you've got

i feel mad enough to tell ya
what you can do with what you've got...

albeit that the lyrics are simple and repetative, when you listen to this song, there's this great unlying theme under all the fluff; the ability to tell someone who had treated you like shit, to go fuck themselves. i think that's a very liberating message, one that hopefully i can find one day.
